Alayne Rittano
The story behind

Alayne Rittano

Every fragrance, at its heart, is an act of memory. It was Alayne Rittano who first taught our founder this truth, long before it was fashionable to say so. It is in her memory, and in her name, that this house was founded. "I met the late Alayne Rittano on a crisp autumn evening, many years ago. I was a young boy who had spent his days wandering the farmers market, and among the stalls I came upon a woman selling handmade candles unlike any I had encountered before. She wanted more from her work than a pleasant and, frankly, in most cases overwhelming, scent to fill a room. She spoke instead of an almost intoxicating aroma, one capable of summoning a memory whole. She described how each candle she poured called to mind a particular remembrance of hers. A past love, a favorite piece of art, a single afternoon she had never quite let go of. Her stories moved me so deeply that I returned to that market every time it came to town, if only to hear her speak again of where her inspiration had come from." - Bodie Redmond Alayne Rittano never owned a company, and she did not live to see one bear her name. It is in honor of the woman who first taught that scent could hold a memory the way little else can. Through Alayne Rittano, her vision endures: that a candle is not merely an object to be burned, but a fragrant representation of a singular moment in time, a quiet acknowledgment that each person's memory is different, and that some are meant to linger long after the flame itself has gone out. It is, we hope, an avant-garde departure from a world of candlemaking too often content with the merely pleasant. We do not aim to please every room. We aim, instead, to summon the one memory a room was always meant to hold.
